In 2007 Blender Foundation chairman Ton Roosendaal established the 'Blender Institute' following the overwhelming success of 'Elephants Dream', the world's first open movie project. This is now the permanent office and studio to more efficiently organize the Blender Foundation goals, to bring core Blender developers together, and to work on open content projects for Blender Cloud.

The company currently employs 24 full time people. The new office in Amsterdam houses offices for administration, developers, a store, a render farm and test lab, a class room, space for workshops/sprints and a studio where artists work on animation film productions.

Until further notice, the offices are not open for visits.

Open Projects and Co-development Business

The term Open Project means that the end result and creation process will be published under an open license, free for everyone to redistribute, reuse, remix or publish. Typically we'll use the Creative Commons (attribution required) license for it.

Open projects (at least the parts created by the Blender Institute) will be created using free and open source software.

Since we don't claim income from licensing or royalty, each project has to get financed in advance. A combination of these different components can be used:

  1. Blender Cloud, an innovative subscription based crowd funding platform. This is currently the main income for Blender Institute.
  2. Blender Foundation grants, blender.org campaigns, donations, etc.
  3. Subsidy (Culture funds, EU, Government…).
  4. Corporate sponsoring and income from third party cooperation. Companies can enjoy the immediate benefits of having rights-free content.

An increasing income source are Co Development projects with other companies or studios. We will hire or involve the developers for topics that align well with the Blender roadmap *and* benefit the contractor well. Such agreements can have milestones and deliverables. Only projects that involve 3 or more months of work will be taken in consideration.

Current project

In the past 12 years, we've realized twelve open projects. Adobe premiere create video.

Currently we work on Blender Cloud content (short films, training) and Cloud Services (production and render management).
